Facebook’s crypto wallet has been shot down by banking committee senators just hours after it launched a pilot.



Five Senators have demanded the immediate closure of Facebook’s new crypto wallet simply hours after senator launched in partnership with Coinbase. 

Crypto skeptic legislator Elizabeth Warren was one in every of the 5 urging Facebook business executive Mark Zuckerberg to “immediately discontinue” the project. in a very letter sent to Zuckerberg on October. 19, the 5 Democrat Senators wrote:

“Given the scope of the scandals surrounding your company, we write to voice our strongest opposition to Facebook’s revived effort to launch a cryptocurrency and digital wallet, now branded ‘Diem’ and ‘Novi,’ respectively.”

Diem is Facebook’s formidable stablecoin project, once known as Libra, that has been the topic of serious scrutiny and restrictive roadblocks for years leading to variety of key partners withdrawal method of the venture. Novi is that the firm’s crypto wallet, designed to carry the Diem token and different stablecoins. 

Novi launched a pilot within the U.S. and Guatemala on Oct. 19 in partnership with Coinbase which is able to offer crypto custody services. The pilot can alter users to accumulate, send and receive Paxos dollars (USDP) through their Novi account. 

On Oct. 20, Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong congratulated co-creator and a member of Diem David Marcus, adding “it takes tons of perseverance to ignore the haters and ship.” 

The shot across the bow came from the workplace of legislator Brian Schatz and was co-signed by Tina Smith, Richard Blumenthal, banking committee chair Sherrod Brown, and Elizabeth Warren. 

They expressed that Facebook has repeatedly created aware business selections to continue with “actions that have injured its users and therefore the broader society,” adding:

“Facebook cannot be trusted to manage a payment system or digital currency when its existing ability to manage risks and keep consumers safe has proven wholly insufficient.”

In a letter from the company saying the pilot, Marcus explicit “We shall migrate Novi to the Diem payment network once it receives regulative approval.” 

The firm has way loftier ambitions than simply a crypto wallet and stablecoin within the digital house. On Oct. 17 Facebook discovered plans to make 10,000 high-skilled jobs within the EU over the next 5 years to create its own metaverse.
