In July, Kenya saw a significant surge in interest in Worldcoin, with up to 350,000 residents expressing their intent to receive the project's crypto token. This accounted for 25% of Worldcoin's global total at that time. However, the Kenyan government suspended Worldcoin's activities, and the project's executives are expected to appear before a parliamentary committee to address concerns.
Kenya witnessed a remarkable surge in interest in Worldcoin during July, with up to 350,000 residents indicating their desire to receive the project's crypto token. This substantial number represented approximately 25% of Worldcoin's global total at that point. However, the Kenyan government suspended Worldcoin's activities, and now the project's executives are expected to appear before a parliamentary committee to address concerns.
A parliamentary committee in Kenya, tasked with investigating Worldcoin's activities in the East African nation, recently disclosed the significant interest shown by Kenyan residents before the government's suspension of the project. According to the committee's findings, Kenyan subscribers accounted for a quarter of WorldCoin's global total in July.
However, as reported by The Star, the total number of World ID sign-ups from 34 different countries exceeded 2.26 million by August. Additionally, Worldcoin highlighted in an August 31 blog post that demand for the World ID has continued to grow. They pointed to a recent record-breaking number of sign-ups in Argentina as evidence of this growing interest.
Despite Worldcoin's enthusiasm about its project milestones, Kenyan authorities have taken a stringent stance towards the entity and its local affiliates. Furthermore, a Kenyan court has reportedly supported the government's decision to suspend Worldcoin activities in the country.
The parliamentary committee, chaired by Narok West legislator Gabriel Tongoyo, learned about some individuals' difficulties in cashing out their tokens. Tongoyo announced that the owners of Worldcoin would soon appear before the Kenyan parliament to address concerns related to the crypto project. Due to travel issues, their appearance has been rescheduled for September 4th.
Tongoyo also noted that Solicitor General Shadrack Mose and the country's Data Commissioner, Immaculate Kassait, are expected to appear before the committee to provide additional insights into the matter.
